Celtic Camping: A Stargazer’s Paradise in the UK Dark Sky Zone
When most people think of camping in the UK, they imagine rolling hills, lush green landscapes, and perhaps the sound of the sea in the distance. But for those who truly want to connect with nature—and the stars above—Celtic Camping offers an unforgettable experience in one of the UK’s most beautiful and least light-polluted areas: the Dark Sky Zone.
Why Choose Celtic Camping?
Celtic Camping is a hidden gem for nature lovers, particularly for those who cherish the tranquillity of rural camping and the serenity that comes with being by the sea. Situated in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Celtic Camping offers the perfect base to explore the dark skies of the UK while enjoying all the benefits of outdoor living. The location is ideal for those who are eager to sleep under the stars, away from the distractions of modern life, yet still want a touch of comfort and facilities during their stay.
One of the primary draws of Celtic Camping is its proximity to some of the clearest night skies in the UK. Here, away from the hustle and bustle of city life, the absence of artificial lighting allows for some of the best stargazing conditions you can find anywhere in Europe. We have been lucky enough to experience the Northern lights twice so far in 2024. Imagine lying in your tent or campervan, with the Milky Way stretching above you in all its glory, or witnessing meteor showers streak across the vast sky.

Celestial Events to Look Forward to in the UK Dark Sky Zone (2024-2025)
From meteor showers to planetary alignments, there are plenty of spectacular events to look forward to between now and January 2025. If you’re planning a camping trip at Celtic Camping, you’ll be treated to some incredible views of the night sky. Here’s a list of upcoming celestial events that will be visible in the UK Dark Sky Zone:
Geminid Meteor Shower
Peak Dates: December 13–14, 2024
What to Expect: Often considered the best meteor shower of the year, the Geminids typically deliver 120 meteors per hour at their peak. This shower is particularly famous for its bright, colourful meteors and is visible across the UK, making it a must-see event for any stargazer.
Winter Solstice and Conjunction of Venus and Saturn
Date: December 21, 2024
What to Expect: The Winter Solstice marks the longest night of the year, perfect for stargazing. On the same day, Venus and Saturn will be in conjunction, appearing close together in the night sky. This is an excellent opportunity to see these two bright planets shine side by side, especially in the dark, clear skies of the Dark Sky Zone.
Quadrantid Meteor Shower
Peak Dates: January 3–4, 2025
What to Expect: The Quadrantids are a strong meteor shower, although the peak is brief, lasting only a few hours. Expect up to 50 meteors per hour. The Quadrantids can be viewed in the early hours of the morning, offering another great reason to stay up and enjoy the crisp winter night skies at Celtic Camping.
Supermoon: Wolf Moon
Date: January 25, 2025
What to Expect: The first full Moon of 2025, known as the Wolf Moon, will be a Supermoon, meaning the Moon will appear larger and brighter than usual due to its closer proximity to Earth. The Dark Sky Zone offers an excellent vantage point to enjoy this celestial phenomenon in its full glory, without the interference of light pollution.
Bonus Tips for Stargazing at Celtic Camping
- Bring Binoculars or a Telescope: While the naked eye is enough to enjoy most celestial events, bringing binoculars or a telescope can enhance your experience, allowing you to get a closer view of the planets, meteors, and even lunar features during the full moon.
- Download a Stargazing App: Apps like SkySafari or Stellarium are perfect for identifying constellations, stars, and planets. These apps can also help you track upcoming celestial events and find the best time to observe them.
- Check the Weather: UK weather can be unpredictable, so make sure to check the forecast before heading to the campsite. Clear skies will give you the best view of these celestial spectacles.
